Everyone pays the price for theft. It means that we all have to pay more when we go shopping and can put small shops out of business, costing people their jobs.

Stealing from shops, people’s homes and cars is often called ‘petty crime’ but there is no such thing. If you are caught breaking the law you could face serious punishment. Most people rely heavily on their cars, maybe to get to work, see their family or even for medical reasons. Damaging someone’s car will have a huge impact on their life.

You can help members of your family look after their cars by checking that the doors are locked and there are no valuables on show.

Someone who is thinking of stealing from a shop or a person may not realise that they are affecting other people’s lives. Try and talk to them but if you think they won’t listen, talk to a trusted adult and they may be able to help without causing a confrontation.
